TO CANDIDATES

The map can help you locate media outlets that serve communities with sizable populations in your area and that cover your geographic region. An outlet’s audience or reach is not limited to its location. Rather than focusing on the outlets physically located within or near your area:

  • Use the Community filter to search by an ethnic community
  • Use the Geographic reach filter to see just the outlets that cover news and events pertaining to a borough or parts of a borough

To find what communities have large populations in your area:

  • Visit Population FactFinder from NYC Planning to see Hispanic and Asian subgroups (“Demographics” tab) and place of birth, language spoken at home and ancestry (“Social” tab) by approximations of neighborhoods and approximations of community districts (select “PUMA”).
  • For Asian populations, see this brief from the Asian American Federation which includes Asian ethnic groups by city council district.
  • To see the top languages spoken by council district, go to the New York City Council website and scroll down to “New York City’s Languages Map by Council District.”
  • Go to data.census.gov to see Hispanic and Asian subgroups by borough, as well as ancestry (does not include Staten Island).

The location of some outlets are approximate and for those within the five boroughs, they may not necessarily be located within the shown council district.

To see additional information for each outlet, visit the Many Voices, One City directory.

TO COMMUNITY MEDIA

You can use the map and the “Candidates” tab to identify those running for public office in the regions your media outlet serves.

Map (tab):

  • Click on a city council district relevant to your community to see the candidates running
  • Type in an address, as exact as possible, to see what district it falls within

Candidates (tab):

  • Search for candidates by name or the office they are seeking whether that be local (city council, borough president, district attorney) or citywide (comptroller, public advocate, mayor)
  • For additional information on the candidates, see the full database.

If your media outlet is not on the map, search for the outlet in the community media directory. If it’s not there, complete this form to add it to the directory – please make sure to provide a mailing address or email CCM with an approximate address. If it is in the directory, please email CCM.

If the information listed for your outlet is incorrect or outdated, email CCM with the changes and we will update the details.
